Who is eligible for legal aid?

Any person residing in Quebec who is financially eligible and whose legal service is covered by the Act.

Exceptions and special cases:

• A non-profit organization whose members are natural persons who are financially eligible for legal aid and whose legal service is covered by the Act.

• A person residing outside Quebec, if he/she demonstrates that he/she is financially eligible for legal aid in Quebec, and if the legal service requested is covered by the Act.

How does one get legal aid?

Steps to get legal help.

The first step in your request is to call us at 514-864-2111.

We will then schedule an appointment with the office that will provide you with the services you need. In order to provide you with quality services and cover all your needs, we have 6 civil offices in the Montreal area, a criminal and penal law office, a youth law office, an immigration law office, a health law office and a multisectoral office in Laval.

How does the first legal aid appointment work?

Your 1st legal aid appointment.

Bring all of your documents necessary to review your eligibility for legal aid. Do you want a legal aid lawyer?

Bring all your documents, meet with him/her to verify your eligibility for legal aid and briefly explain your legal problem. Do you want a private lawyer?

Bring all your documents. We will verify if you are eligible for legal aid and we will issue a mandate to the lawyer of your choice. Why bring all the required documents? This is to determine your eligibility for free or contributory legal aid. Once the decision rendered, the legal aid lawyer or the private practice lawyer will be able to take charge of your file.
